The Beginning:

A New Path Unfolding

After nearly two decades immersed in the world of running my own building design business, I found myself at a crossroads. I'd sold the company, and honestly, the thought of starting something new wasn't even on my radar.

During those final years, a few requests came in that really sparked my curiosity: designing tiny houses. The approach felt like just putting a small house on a trailer and calling it a day. While that concept certainly has its place, I couldn't shake the feeling that it was missing something crucial. It wasn't quite a truly functional home, nor was it truly a flexible caravan. It felt like a compromise, and I knew there had to be a better way.

The Reason: A Heart for Home

It's clear to anyone paying attention that the way we approach housing in Australia isn't working for everyone. From my building design background, I saw the incredible potential of the tiny house movement, but I also saw a significant gap. Instead of just trying to "get around" regulations by slapping wheels on a house, I envisioned something different.

This is where the thought of the ultimate tiny house entered my mind – one that not only functions beautifully as a genuine dwelling but also offers the true convenience and ease of a caravan. No cramped lofts, no poky kitchens, no awkward bathrooms. No need for massive trucks or cranes just to move it. The concept was to build something my own mum could live in for ten years and never feel like she had to stop truly living. She deserves comfort, dignity, and independence, and I believe others do too.

And so, from that deep conviction, HOVAN was born.

The name HOVAN itself is a blend –

HOme + CaraVAN = HOVAN.

It's more than just a catchy name; it embodies our core philosophy. A HOVAN Tiny House isn't just a temporary fix until you can afford a "proper" home; it's a proper home. And it genuinely offers all the benefits of a caravan: transportability, excellent resale value, and the ability to cut through the red tape of traditional building approvals.

The End: More Than Just Business

Sharing this part feels a little vulnerable, like laying my heart on the table. There's a fear of being misunderstood, of sounding overly optimistic, or even a touch arrogant. But it's the truth of why HOVAN exists, and it's a story I feel compelled to share.

To be honest, the idea of starting another business didn’t exactly set my soul on fire. I'm not primarily driven by money, and I certainly don't chase stress. Given the choice, I'd probably be happily playing music and sharing coffee with friends.

But a deeper challenge stirred within me. I felt called to create a workplace where people could truly discover who they are and who they are meant to be. I want to offer a place of employment that provides the flexibility and support for people to pursue their own callings. My hope is to cultivate a design and build process that isn't just about the weekly grind but one that leaves our team with enough "gas in the tank" to truly love their families and their neighbours.

And ultimately, HOVAN exists to build houses that genuinely help people. Imagine a family who can offer a comfortable, private home to a loved one in need or a friend who can easily provide sanctuary for someone navigating a difficult time. These are the real-world impacts we strive for.

Of course, we live in the real world. People need to be paid fairly to live well. A business needs to be sustainable enough to weather tough times. So, while these deeper motivations drive us, we also understand the practicalities of running a business responsibly.

So, why does HOVAN truly exist? Because, as the Bible puts it, "Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you." To me, that’s about practical love, building something good, and helping people find their place.

P.S. As I've embarked on this HOVAN journey, I’ve been incredibly inspired. I’ve met so many other business owners who aren't driven purely by profit, who are willing to make sacrifices for the well-being of their workers and customers. I was hesitant to share my own motivations, knowing that countless others are quietly doing incredible things without making a big fuss. To all of you, well done – you truly inspire me.
